Bout of Books: I Feel the Need, the Need to Read!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 13th and runs through Sunday, May 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. Readathon: Let the Day Begin!

It's almost here!  And I am going all Carol Ann on this shiz!

You know what I love about Readathon?  It's a chance to let my nerd flag fly. 

I'm on the East Coast, so I'm kicking this off at 8am.  I realize some of you are starting much earlier in the day, or later in the day, or maybe it's already night where you are, but here's a song to get us going nevertheless:

Are you in, midnighters?  Are you ready?  Sorry for the way I am going to BLOW UP YOUR READER AND TWITTER FEED, but hopefully you find my spastic love for books and readathons endearing. I mean, I managed to link Poltergeist, nerd kitties, and an obscure 80's band I love that you've probably never heard of (unless you saw it on a past Readathon post I made) all to Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon.  I also apologize for going all shouty caps at you too, but I'm that excited that lowercase letters just can't convey my feelings.

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is later this month, but my excitement and anticipation is already HUGE.  I signed up to cheer, and honestly, I think that's what I'm going to focus on.  I always try (and kind of fail) to read.  But the most fun I have during Readathon is the social aspects.  So that's what I'm doing.  I'm going to listen to audio books, cheer and tweet.  Maybe even host a mini-challenge with Fake Steph.

Books: Finished the audio book for The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Crusie (the last 2 and 1/2 hrs), read from Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi (154 pgs) and started the audio book The Amber House (35 mins)
Challenges: Scientific Discovery by The Book Barbies (and now I have that Barbie Girl song by Aqua in my head!)

 You have made a scientific discovery (who knew you were so good at science?!) on how to bring fictional characters to life. The problem? The method still isn't *perfect,* so you can only bring two people to life, and they must return to the land of fiction in 30 days. Who will you choose as your bestie and your love interest for that one splendid month? (Feel free to add pictures if you like, but they are not required.)

My Answer: This is a hard one.  Would the characters have their bookish qualities?  Because if so, I'd choose Alice Cullen as my BFF so that she could turn me into a vampire that never needs to sleep and then I would READ ALL THE BOOKS.  All of them!

But, I'm going to go with these choices instead (even though it will lead to immediate regret and recrimination after I read everyone else's choices):

Bestie: Jane from Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs by Molly Harper.  She and I could hang out making witty observations about everyone and everything around us.  And I'd invite my real life besties to hang out too, because they all love Jane. And she would make us laugh and laugh.  I'd have to take her out the book after she gets fired but before she gets hit my the drunk driver, so that she'll want to drink a lot, but alcohol instead of blood.  She's just someone I'd want to know, and a month would be a good enough time, because eventually I'd grow to resent not be the funny one anymore.

Love Interest: I could go with Mr. Darcy, but if I only have a month, then I need someone who isn't going to take a year to court my ass.  And I can't pick Odd Thomas, because as much as I love him, I have no wish to do the horizontal hokey pokey with him.  And I can't pick too many of the hotties from YA because I'm 35 and I don't want to go to jail.  So because I've got Les Mis on the brain, I'll take Enjolras from  Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. I've had a thing for him since I saw the I musical in high school.  Marius is a hottie too, but he's so whiny about Cosette and if he can't appreciate a awesome woman like Eponine, then screw Marius! I can't remember Enjolras' description in the book, but he's always played by a hottie on the stage and screen, he doesn't have a girlfriend he already is obsessed with, and he's about to die in a bloody revolution so I'm sure I can get him to focus some of that passionate energy he's been putting into freeing the oppressed in France to my bedroom.  I speak enough french to get the message through: Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?

Mini Challenge Hour 19: Book Sentences

Hope everyone's having a wonderful Readathon so far!  Thank you so much for stopping by and checking out my challenge.  Here's what you need to do:

Book Sentence Challenge

Take a look at the books you have laying around, and using 3 or more books, use just the titles to create a sentence!  Take a picture of the books and upload it to your blog or Twitter account (or really anything that I can see). Here's some examples of book sentences::

You must take a picture of the books, ebooks do not count (sorry, I love them too, I own both a Kindle and a Nook, but for this challenge, you need to take a picture of physical books).  You may not add words to the sentences.

Readathon Book Piles! Bring it!

 Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is this Saturday!  I am so excited!!  I tell this story every readathon, but I would not be a book blogger if it weren't for Dewey's event, I'm just sad that I didn't start blogging until after Dewey had passed away.  I am so glad that I am a part of her legacy though.  This will be my 7th time participating in Dewey's Readathon!  This time around I get to do Readathon with 3 other book bloggers!  Kim from On The Wings Of Books is hosting at her house, Steph from The Fake Steph will be joining us for our 2nd official Readathon (unofficially our 3rd) and our friend and newbie book blogger, Katie from KT's Reading Rainbow will be doing her first ever Readathon!!

I'll be cheerleading again, which is always a blast!  Please though, I beg you, turn off CAPTCHA and comment approval, at least for 24 hours!  If you aren't sure what I'm talking about by CAPTCHA (word verification), just leave me a link to your blog and I'll tell you if you have it on your blog or not. ;)  Trust me, it'll attract a lot more comments and cheers if you make it easy for everyone to stop by!

And now for my favorite part or pre-Readathon prep: Building the pile o'books!!  This may surprise some of you that expected me to say that my favorite part of Readathon was the snack prep, and I am by no means underestimating my love of binging during Readathon (really, Kim, perhaps building a vomitorium would mean more brownies and Coke, and less healthy shiz?), but it is the piles of books that bring this chick to the yard.  Ohh...milkshakes...

Fright Fall Readathon Update

I have not had as much time to read this week as I normally do.  Which makes me sad.  But I did finish a book! There's still time to sign up, just go to Seasons of Reading!  Here's what I've been up to:

Finished: The Dead Father's Club by Matt Haig (a modern take on Hamlet).  My review will be up next week as part of  the Bloggers Dressed In Blood event I'm co-hosting.  Check it out!

Still Reading: It by Stephen King- I'm listening to the audio and it's a long one, but I have listened to a couple of hours this week already.

Just Started: Venom (Secrets of the Eternal Rose #1) by Fiona Paul- I'm very excited about this book because it was the book the Penguin reps at BEA were most excited about.

Hopefully I'll have time for a few mini-challenges and more reading!  I'd really love to finish Venom and start Possess by Gretchen McNeil.

My Answer: I usually keep them.  Sure, I'll lend them to friends and family, but I'm a book hoarder.  Occasionally I'll donate a large pile to Goodwill or the take some to a senior assisted living home, and I trade some on PaperBackSwap, but mostly I keep them.  I'm a re-reader, I like to re-visit old friends.  I get easily attached to books.  And of course, I also buy lots of ebooks too, so of course I keep those (and I don't have to feel guilty about that!).  I did sign up for BookCrossing and I'm going to give it a try just because it sounds cool and I looked, no one in my town has released any books in the Go Hunting section, so now I have to!

Hawaii!  Retired NYPD officer Dave Gurney is now having to deal with the Good Shepard killer who instead of targeting rich Mercedes drivers in the past, will now have hunted down rich boat owners.  Gurney's injuries from the previous book are still bothering him, but the sunshine and tourists make his ill temper even worse.  I can see his NY attitude really being put to test by calmer, more laid back Hawaii 5.0. ;)

Okay, what I like most about participating in Readathons is the sense of community.  Reading is normally such a solitary hobby, but during Readathons I end up connecting with other readers through blogs or Twitter and I love that.  I don't know that I have any rituals per se, other than for Dewey's Readathon where I spend a long time finding the perfect books for my reading stack.  But that's mostly because Dewey's is a 24 hour Readathon, so I need books that can keep me awake and reading.  Week long Readathons are a bit more relaxed, so I can read books I need to get to or want to get to for a specific goal- in this case a review book, a book club book and some books I want to read for BEA.  This is my first Bout of Books Readathon, but I assure you it won't be my last!  I love that Readathons really push me to use my spare time reading, instead of vegging out in front of the tv or playing on the computer. I even have plans to possibly host my own Readathon this summer... we'll see!

I've had Night Circus on the brain lately.  Partly because it's been a long time since I've loved a book the way I love The Night Circus and a recent re-read only strengthened my love for it.  Honestly, my plan to not look like a tourist in New York when I go to BEA is to dress up like I'm going to the Night Circus.

I finished the very end of Grave Secret, and the last 140 some pages of Meet Your Match, Cupid Delaney.  I started, but did not finish, Envy and Will Grayson, Will Grayson (audio).   

Books I didn't get to at all: Divergent and 77 Shadow Street... kind of bummed about both and of course several review books showed up this week, so they'll have to wait a bit.  Again.
    
I pretty much loved everything I read this readathon, and I'm so glad I signed up!  I will definitely be doing any readathon's hosted by Castle Macabre.  I was really impressed by how it was run, and thanks to all the bloggers and authors who donated their time to challenges, prizes, posts and reading!  As much as I love the blogging community, I feel most at home with those that like the occasional darker story. ;)

Spring Into Horror Readathon Starting Post!

Obviously I just can't get enough of Readathons!  The Spring Into Horror Read-a-Thon is being hosted over at Castle Macabre, so stop there to read about the event. This is one I feel good about making some progress with (I participated in 22 out of the 24 hours of Dewey's Readathon, but didn't get much reading done!) and maybe I can make a nice dent in my TBR shelf too!

And this is Readathon that is practically custom made for this Midnight Book Girl!  An entire week of Readathon, complete with some challenges and prizes, and every participant has to read at least one "scary" book. 

I've already started reading today (after sleeping the majority of yesterday away like some fairy tale character).  I finished a book that I had started for Readathon on Saturday but then put aside because it just wasn't holding my interest.  Here's what I read:

Meet Your Match, Cupid Delaney by Ellen Leroe

Quick Mini Review: This is a sequel to a much beloved book from my childhood, Have a Heart, Cupid Delaney, and I was so excited when I found out that there was a sequel and I was able to get a copy from PaperbackSwap.  Alas, YA of the late 80's and early 90's isn't quite what it is now.  But I still love the premise of cupids helping out love lorn teens, and all my favorite characters are back in play.  Yes, it's super mushy and the teens act more like grade school kids, but I'm glad I went back and finished it.  The ending was perfect for Cupid Delaney, and Alvin and Helen got the ending they deserved.  But the dude's arms on the cover are kind of scary, as my friend Steph pointed out.  Horrible cover, cutesy story, good nostalgic times!

But I bet you're wondering what other books I'm hoping to get to this week, since the above book doesn't quite go with the Spring Into Horror Readathon theme.  So here's what I'm hoping to get to:

I know, it looks like a lot, and it is, but 3 of the selections are Graphic novels, but I think it's a reasonable goal for me since I'm not working a whole lot this week.  Night Circus is a re-read for book club, so I'm sure it'll be faster this time around, but since I'm already almost done with my current audio book, I might just re-listen to the audio version.

I'm about to start Anna Dressed in Blood, and I'm so excited to finally read this book!  I feel like it's a long time coming (and it is).  Any books on your list or tbr shelf that you can't wait to read?
