This morning I'm reading:

The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle #2) by Maggie Stiefvater.

I'm almost done with this book, and I'm all sorts of sad about that.  Because it's an amazing book, full of wonderful words and characters, and it just fills my heart up in a way that only the very best of books do.  I was going to be good this year and read my BEA books in order of publication, but I just can't resist this series.  Honestly, if you start this series, be prepared to mourn the fact that these characters don't really exist.  Well, they don't exist in the real world, but Stiefvater brings them to life in our hearts, which is almost better.  

I'm also officially moving to WordPress this month, starting this week.  If you don't already, please follow me somewhere else other than GFC.  I'm liking BlogLovin' a lot, but I'm still new to it.  Also, be on the look out for some giveaways once I make the jump to WordPress, as I beg once more for followers.

Waiting on Wednesday: Vicious

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine and is a meme to share what future books we're most excited about.

I just got back from BEA and while I have tons of WoW books sitting on my shelves, I thought I'd pick a book that didn't get.  Because you can't get all the books, it's just not possible.  Unless I hire assistants... 

Here's what I'm waiting on:

I really enjoyed Schwab's The Archived, and I've been assured that I will love her book The Near Witch- so I'm going to read that first, until I see Steph next month and we do our book hostage exchange.  But more on that later. ;)

Follow the White Rabbit (Beautiful Madness #1) by Kellie Sheridan

Kellie was one of my roommates last year at BEA.  There were four of us in a tiny room, and once we all started bringing back books from the show, Harry Potter's cupboard under the stairs would have seemed spacious.  Somehow, Kellie manage to squirrel her books away (possibly I had made one too many jokes about stealing them) and surprised on the last day with the magical space she'd found to store them. Then a few months later, Kellie surprised us again- she was publishing a book!  I just found this one the other day, so I thought I'd go ahead and read it because today I'm BEA bound once again! 

I'm so excited, but somehow I actually managed to sleep last night.  So now I just have to finish packing, listen to the last 1/2 hour of Warm Bodies so I can start Joe Hill's NOS4A2 on the train.  It feels weird to just be taking my Kindle and phone on a trip, and not several physical books too, but I'll have tons of books to read while in NY.

Sundays in Bed With... Sweet Salt Air

This morning I'm reading:

Sweet Salt Air by Barbara Delinsky

This is actually an ARC and doesn't come out until June 18th, but I have a feeling I'm going to see a lot of copies of this book when I go to the beach in August.  It has that beach read feeling- and one of the main characters is a food blogger (she's always taking pictures of food before eating it, which totally reminded me of taking pictures of books with drinks when I read at Panera or Starbucks).  I'm just a few chapters in, and although it's not a type of book I normally read, I'm surprised by how much I'm liking it.  Ultimately it's a book about friendship, and I think as we age- especially once we hit our 30's- we start to truly appreciate what a gift true friendship is.   Also the book takes place on an island off of Maine and now I'm worried that Fenwick Island in Delaware is not going to compare well when it comes time for vacation. There should be a special island just for book bloggers to vacation at, and every little cottage should have a well stocked library.  And we should only have to pay what we can afford to pay in order to vacation there.  Someone smarter and hardworking then me- look into this!

I'm also finishing up Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore (less than 50 pages to go!) and I think if I power through today I can finish the last 5 hours of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss so that my Bout of Books won't be a complete failure.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

The Hubs actually asked me if I'd read this, because one of his employees mentioned it to him as being a book I might like if I enjoyed George R. R. Martin books.  I downloaded it on Audible, and folks, it's a loooong book.  I'm 5 hours in, with 22 more hours to go.  But, I have to say, I'm really enjoying it.  It's similar to Martin only in that it's a complex fantasy novel.  It's a very easy listen, so it's not as daunting as a long book can be.

Sundays In Bed With... What's a Ghoul to Do?

This morning I'm reading:

 What's A Ghoul to Do? (A Ghost Hunter Mystery #1) by Victoria Laurie.

So far, so good, but the chapters seem sooooo long.  I guess I've been reading a lot of books with short chapters lately?  And listening to audiobooks, so I don't even really notice how long the chapters are. 

I just finished Game (Jasper Dent #2) by Barry Lyga, and OMG did it end on a serious cliffhanger!  Actually, it ended in like 3 different major cliffhangers.  I am dying!  

Also, because I listened to Game on audio, and Testimony by Anita Shreve recently, I finally learned that I've been pronouncing Hachette wrong for years.  I feel like an idiot.  Granted, I often feel this way, so I guess no biggie. ;)

Q:  Is there a song that reminds you of a book? Or vice versa? What is the song & the book?

I should write this shiz down, because sometimes I'll be listening to the perfect song that reminds me of what I'm reading and I'm like yes!  But then I forget all about it. That makes me a sad panda.

 Lucky for this week's question I'm reading Unbreakable (Unraveling #2) by Elizabeth Norris.  The book is very action packed, like a awesome YA mix of X-Files and 24.  Every chapter begins with a countdown of time left for the main heroine to stop major bad shiz from happening so the song that immediately pops in mind is 24 by Jem:

And of course, because of all the X-files love, David Duchovny by Bree Sharp:

 Ignore the fact that Jerry Springer is in the pic, this is a MUST listen song to anyone that's ever dug Mulder and those of us that can't always (or won't) separate an actor from a role they play (Alexander Skarsgard, or should I say, Eric Northman, I'm looking at you).

Unbreakable (Unraveling #2) by Elizabeth Norris

Last year I read an loved Unraveling, which filled the hole that X-Files had left in my heart.  So far Unbreakable is proving to be a great 2nd novel, the action was kind of immediate and I still love how the beginning of each chapter is a countdown.  I'm hoping to read a good chunk of this today.  Many thanks to Wiley from Authors on the Web for sending me a copy!

I'm also picking up the books I'm giving out for World Book Night!  I'm very excited to take part in this, and I will post on Tuesday my plans and what book I chose to hand out.

Feature and Follow: Hanging with the Homies

Despite all the craziness that is currently happening in Massachusetts, I'm participating in Parajunkee and Alison Can Read's Feature & Follow Friday.  Today's question is:

Q: If you could hang out with any author (living) who would it be and what would you want to do?

A. Wow.  So many authors are running through my head, but I have to go with Stephen King, because I've wanted to hang with him since I was a kid.  His books symbolized adult books, and what it meant to be a writer.  I know some of his characters better than I know real life friends.  His words have kept me up late at night, crying over the loss of fictional characters and started my path towards full fledged book worm.  I'd just hang out with him and his wife Tabby (because she seems like she'd be cool too).  Maybe play some baseball with them before heading to a cookout and talking about the Loser Club over a beer or three. And I don't even like baseball, or beer for that matter- although since it's my fantasy he'd have a few Guinness set aside just for me. Oh, and he'd give me the manuscript of the latest book he finished to "get my ideas".  Hey, it's my fantasy, might as well go big, right?

I'm really liking it so far and I'll be finishing it today.  The cover is fitting... but it's not exciting.  I'd rather the book look more like the one described in the book.  This book has made me cry, and want to brush up on my Spanish.

Top Ten Tuesday: Before I Was a Blogger

It's that time of the week, midnighters!  Top Ten Tuesdays is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

April 9: Top Ten Favorite Books I Read Before I Was A Blogger 

I was always a reader, but I will say that book blogging opened up my bookish world tremendously.   Mostly because of bloggers like you, introducing me to books I might not have heard of otherwise and challenging me to read genres outside of my old favorites.  But here are some of my favorite books before I became a book blogger:

1. Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz- I listened to audio books with my dad when I was younger, but Odd Thomas is the book that really got me hooked.  I read this for the first time back when I was still living in Oklahoma, long before I made move back to the East Coast and discovered blogging.  

2. Something Blue (Darcy and Rachel #2) by Emily Griffith- I read a lot of chic lit in my days, but this is one of my all time favorites.  Sadly, it's not a genre that I read much these days, and other than Something Blue, I haven't much enjoyed her other books.

3. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen- the book that launched my love for magical realism!  It was everything I wanted Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic to be (the movie is much more light-hearted than the novel), and Allen instantly become a must buy author. 

4. It by Stephen King- so many of his books could have been on this list, but this is the one that I've read the most, the one where I connected the most with the characters.  I am an honorary member of the Loser's Club!

5. The India Fan by Victoria Holt- This was my very first Holt book, and I have a vivid memory of picking it from the library shelves.  The first time I read it I was in 7th grade, and I've read it, or parts of it, every year since then.  Before I became a book blogger I probably re-read it even more, but that's because it used to be hard to find books I liked, if you can believe that!  

6. Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar- his books are strange and quirky, and very different from anything I've read before or since.  I love his style, and I've since read the sequel to this, his The Good Fairies of New York and Lux the Poet.  I think he's brilliant!

7. Falling by Christopher Pike- obviously I have lots of love for all things Pike- especially his YA.  Falling is an adult novel, and it deals with revenge, love and obsession.  I think it's one of his very best books, but so few people have read it!!

8. The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule- I used to read a lot of true crime, which will surprise absolutely no one.  Ann Rule was actually friends with Ted Bundy, they met while working on a suicide prevention hot line, and she'd already gotten the job of writing about the killings before it was revealed that her old friend Ted was the prime suspect.  I've always found that fascinating. 

9.  The Witching Hour by Anne Rice- Being a midnight girl, I of course read all her vampire books, but this book is one of my all time favorites. I really dislike the sequels, but this book is vast and huge and I loved it.  I especially love the history of the Mayfair witches and the New Orleans setting.  I was hoping to re-read this on audible, but they only have a 3 hour abridged version... and the book is 1200 pages long so I have no idea how they how they condensed that into 3 freaking hours. 

10.  Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games- just going to lump these all together because they are responsible for getting me back into YA and led to me becoming a blogger.

 Dare You To (Pushing the Limits #2) by Katie McGarry. 
 The covers look super smexy, but there's not a lot of sex in the books.  This one, since it focuses on the character of Beth,is loaded with f-bombs though.  Seriously- hope there's a little soap in that water so Ryan can wash her mouth out before taking her home to meet the parents.   I started this one yesterday, so I'm almost half-way done.  So far, so good!

This morning I'm reading:

 Rush by Eve Silver.

It's got a cool Starship Troopers/sci-fi vibe to it, but I'm not connecting with the main character yet.  Still early in the book though, and the plot is unique enough to keep me reading.

The dog behind the book is not mine, he belongs to my brother's family.  Just dog sitting.  Sarge is a white German shepherd, but he's HUGE.  Seriously, he's over 140 pounds, so he's big even for his breed.  Don't worry, guys, I'm NOT drinking the water in this house!

Feature And Follow: Emo-tion

Today's Question:

Q: Tell us about the most emotional scene you’ve ever read in a book – and how did you react?

Wow, this is kind of tough one.  Books often rip my heart out on a regular basis. I'm going to expect a lot of Harry Potter in the answers, but with HP I was prepared for death,  although I wasn't expecting the one that happened in Book 6, which I totally convinced myself was faked...  

There are too many books and scenes to choose from!  But here's one I vividly remember: Warning Spoiler in the explanation: Die Softly by Christopher Pike.

It was the first time I'd read a book where the main character dies.  It totally took me by surprise.  The book was narrated from the mc's point of view!  Herb is so brilliant in the book, and I thought for sure the detective was going to get there in time... but that didn't happen.  It shocked me, and ripped my heart out.  The whole confrontation with the killer was tense, but I kept thinking somehow Herb would escape.  I realized then that main characters can die, that authors sometimes choose to kill off popular characters.

I'd also choose the first book in the Odd Thomas series, but I won't spoil that one.  Let's just say there's a scene at the end that made me cry so hard (you know, the great big hyperventilating kind of sobs) that I had to pull the car over because I was listening to the audio.

Last night we had book club, which was one of our best book club discussions ever (Ready Player One, because I know you want to know what book we were talking about).  And then a few of us stayed over... with the intention of doing a mini-readathon, but of course we just ended up talking, since we were all tired and book club lasted until late into the night.  I don't know how much time I'll have to read today, but I'm hoping to make a dent in Fragments.  Sadly this is Court's last day visiting, so I may read while she's packing or trying to finish her psychology reading.

Sundays In Bed With... Crash and Burn

 Welcome to my Sundays In Bed With... Meme! The meme that dares to ask, what book has been in your bed this morning?  Come share what book you've spent time curled up reading in bed, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

This morning I'm reading:

 Crash and Burn by Michael Hassan

I'm only 50 pages in, but I am liking it so far.  It's not a quick read though, at least not at this point.  I hope it picks up, since the ARC is over 500 pages and I only have a week with it.  I should be able to get some significant reading done today.  My only problem is with the cover- I get the meaning already from the book, but coupled with the title it makes me think of September 11th, although maybe that's what they're going for?  The book is about two boys who have been connected their whole lives, one a troubled genius and one a troubled slacker, and how the slacker prevents the genius from blowing up their high school.  And there's a whisper-like at the end of Lost in Translation, but this time I think we are going to learn what Burn said to Crash.   However, if I just saw the cover and didn't read the summary I would just assume it was about Sept 11.

Feature and Follow Friday: Giving It Away

It's a little late, but I can't resist the gorgeous new button for Feature and Follow, hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.  This week's question is:

We always talk about books that WE want. Let’s turn it on its head. What books have you given other people lately?

Hmm, I gave away Ready Player One to my brothers, because they actually remember the 80's quite well.  And then I bought a couple of Harry Potter books for Kim- one with the adult British cover and another in Spanish, but that was way back in Christmas.  I also gave her several of my Meg Cabot chick lit books recently, and a bunch of books to some of the ladies in my book club since I've been culling my shelves in preparation for all the books I'll be getting at BEA.  I also plan on getting Courtney the new Maureen Johnson book when we go down to the book signing in early March, because she's being so freaking good about her planned book buying yearly budget and I already pre-ordered my own signed copy. And I pre-ordered The Trouble With Flirting so that I can share it with my blogger bffs (which will entail a new feature I'm cooking up on here called Book STD).
